    Description

WASHITA BATTLEFIELD National Historic Site, National Parks Cover with a
postmarked at Cheyenne, Oklahoma on May 28, 2020. Color painting printed
on cachet #1315 by Alvin Eckert, USCS #9964. The cover is franked with a 44 cent
liberty stamp and 3 cent UCV stamp. This history site and visitor center are
operated by the NPS. Hundreds of Southern Cheyenne were casualties in the violent
clash November 27, 1868. The 7,680 acre battlefield park was established
in 1996 and is administered by the NPS.  The Cheyenne village was attacked by
the  7th Cavalry under Lt. Col. George Armstrong Custer. The strike was considered
a victory by the military and many civilians who suffered from Indian raids on frontier
settlements. The site is located near the border with Texas in west-central Oklahoma.
The leader of the Cheyenne was Chief Black Kettle. There is a 315 acre memorial
associated with the 1868 Battle of the Washita River.
