Lt. Colonel Jimmy Doolittle led a famous 1942 raid on Tokyo, Japan from the aircraft carrier USS Hornet. This was the first offensive action against the enemy islands, and greatly raised American morale in April, 1942.
The flyers used B-25 bombers that were stripped of most equipment and heavily loaded with fuel. They had to launch early because an enemy vessel discovered their battle group closing on their homeland. The photo shows Lt. Colonel Doolittle in center with Chinese soldiers. The November 2013 Reunion was their last public gathering. The last Raider died in 2019.
