Description

Classic Puget Sound FERRY KALAKALA memorial first day cover
postmarked at Washington, DC on Jan 24, 1968. Blue printed photo
of actual ferry on cachet #1551 by Alvin Eckert USCS #9964.
This 276 foot long, screw propelled, steam turbine engine powered ferry
operated on Puget Sound from 1935 to 1967. Originally, she was the Ferry
Peralta in San Francisco Bay. She was accidentally gutted to the water
level in 1933 when the Oakland Key System terminal caught fire.
Re-built in 1935, she was operated by the Black Ball Line on the Seattle
to Bremerton route. The vessel name is Chinook for Flying Bird .
Cover franked with a 6 cent flag stamp (FDOI)
plus a 4 cent Seattle's Worlds Fair stamp (Sc # 1196).
The ferry Kalakala, after being returned from Kodiak, Alaska, where she was a
floating crab processing plant, became the Seattle Area's white elephant.
It was hoped she would become a museum ship in the Seattle area or
a floating restaurant. Unfortunately, she was scrapped in February 2015.
